If you're wondering where to buy black cod in Canada, the honest answer is: online, but read the label. Larry's Catch sells wild black cod from Haida Gwaii, B.C., frozen and shipped to your door, because a lot of the black cod sold to Canadians online is caught in U.S. waters.
Black cod is the buttery, rich fish restaurants glaze with miso. It's also hard to find at a grocery counter. So most people search online, and that's where the origin problem starts.

Where can you buy black cod online in Canada?
You can buy black cod online in Canada from Canadian seafood delivery companies, warehouse clubs and U.S. shops that ship north. Only some of them sell Canadian fish.
When we searched Google for "buy black cod online canada" on October 21, 2026, the one large Canadian retailer on the first page listed its black cod as "Product of USA". The rest of the results were American stores. Canadian-caught black cod for sale was the exception, not the rule.
Why so much black cod sold in Canada is U.S. fish
Black cod lives in the deep, cold North Pacific, and both the U.S. and Canada fish it. On that first page of results, U.S. supply showed up far more often than Canadian.
That isn't bad fish. But if you want to support Canadian fishers, or you simply want to know where your dinner was caught, the country on the label matters.
Black cod vs sablefish: is it the same fish?
Yes. Black cod and sablefish are two names for the same fish, Anoplopoma fimbria. "Sablefish" is the official name; "black cod" is the name on most menus.
It isn't a true cod at all. True cod is lean and flaky; sablefish is rich. Our black cod has 17 g of fat and 15 g of protein per 3 oz serving, which is why it stays moist and silky even when you overcook it a little. If you're searching for where to buy sablefish, you're looking for the same product as black cod.
Where does B.C. black cod come from?
B.C. black cod comes from Canada's Pacific sablefish fishery, which works the deep waters off the B.C. coast, including around Haida Gwaii. Ours comes from the Heras family in Haida Gwaii, a family seafood business that handles its own processing and packing, and it's flash-frozen at sea.
In 2011, the Marine Stewardship Council certified Canada's Pacific sablefish fishery as well managed and sustainable, covering both its trap and hook-and-line fleets. For a buyer, that means sablefish from Canada comes from a fishery that has been checked against an international standard, not just a price. Our supplier, the Heras family, partners with both Ocean Wise and the MSC.
What to check before you buy black cod online
Three details on a product page tell you most of what you need to know before you buy black cod online in Canada.
Origin and catch area on the label
Look for the country and, ideally, the region: "Product of Canada, B.C." or a named place like Haida Gwaii. "Pacific" alone can mean the U.S. or Canada. If the page doesn't say, ask the seller before you order.
Portion size, skin and pin bones
Black cod is rich, so portions are smaller than for halibut or salmon. A 5 to 6 oz piece is a full serving for one. Check whether the portion is skin-on (best for crispy skin) and how many pin bones are left.
Our fillets are about 6 oz, skin-on, pin bone out.
How it was frozen and packed
The best frozen black cod is frozen soon after it's caught and sealed, so no air touches the fish. Ours is flash-frozen at sea. Ice crystals or a grey, dry edge mean it thawed and refroze somewhere along the way.
Not sure where your current black cod comes from? Ours names the place it was caught on every pack. Shop B.C. black cod.
How black cod is shipped frozen across Canada
Black cod delivery in Canada works best frozen. Larry's Catch packs every order with dry ice in an insulated, recyclable liner, which keeps it at about -80 °C in transit. The courier leaves the box at your door, and we pack enough dry ice to last an extra 24 hours after delivery.
Shipping is free on orders over $150. If anything arrives thawed, we replace it or refund you. You can see how the whole process works in how seafood delivery works in Canada.
Frozen black cod keeps up to 6 months in your freezer. Thaw it in the fridge overnight and cook it within 24 hours.
How much black cod do you need per person?
Plan on one 5 to 6 oz portion per person for a main course. Because black cod is so rich, a smaller 3 to 4 oz piece works as a starter or as part of a seafood dinner with other dishes.
For a dinner for four, that means four of our 6 oz portions, or about 1.5 lb in total.
The best ways to cook black cod once it arrives
Black cod suits high heat and bold glazes, because its fat keeps it from drying out.
- Miso glaze: the classic. Marinate overnight, then broil until caramelized. Try our miso maple glazed black cod.
- Baked: 12 to 15 minutes at 400 °F with butter, lemon and herbs. See how to bake black cod.
- Pan-fried with crispy skin: skin side down in a hot pan, flip for the last minute. Our lemon garlic butter black cod takes 15 minutes.
